'Living a Nightmare': Families of Unaccounted For Teens Desperately Seek Information After Alpine Fire
The families of young people lost after a devastating inferno at a venue in a Swiss winter destination are enduring an painful period of uncertainty for answers and appealing for information about their children publicly.
The fire ripped through the Le Constellation bar in the alpine resort, located in the mountains of the Valais region, in the early hours of New Year's Day. Circulated footage depict the ceiling being engulfed in flames as beverages with fireworks are held aloft.
Officials have warned that it could take days if not weeks to identify the fatalities of the tragedy, which resulted in the death of four dozen individuals and wounded another 119. A spokesperson noted on the latest update that 113 of the injured have been accounted for, with the process still underway to identify the remaining few.
In the interim, loved ones have been posting on online platforms to plead for information about their loved ones who were in attendance that night.
Desperate Searches for the Unaccounted For
The location of Swiss national Arthur Brodard, 16, are still unconfirmed, according to an appeal from his parent.
The who lives of a town near Lausanne, informed a local newspaper that she had returned to the city to see if he was in the hospital, while his father did the equivalent search in the capital, but could not find him.
"It feels like a terrible dream, a nightmare. The options are finding my son in the hospital mortuary, or I find him in critical condition. It's terrible," she stated.
She explained that some of his friends had been found with injuries covering nearly half their bodies. "It's indescribable; they endured a terrifying ordeal."
The Italy's foreign ministry has indicated that a number of of its citizens are still unaccounted for.
Included in that group is Emanuele Galeppini, a teenage sportsman, who hailed from Genoa but now residing in the UAE.
The Italian Golf Federation has stated that he is no longer with us, without directly referencing the fire, paying tribute to a "talented young man who carried with him passion and authentic values."
His parent, is quoted as saying that his son was at the bar and was last in contact around midnight. An official spokesperson has indicated that a formal confirmation of his death is not yet.
Other Missing Individuals
Giovanni Tamburi, sixteen, is also unaccounted for. His mother told reporters that he had been on holiday but had ventured out with a group and found himself at the venue.
"Someone with him told me they fled after the fire started and that he had his mobile with him, but then at a specific moment he they were separated," she explained, adding he had been wearing a distinctive piece of jewelry.
One of his educators said, "I remember his kindness and positive demeanor, alongside great responsibility. Every time offer to get me a coffee."
Alice Kallergis, who holds dual Swiss and Greek nationality but lives permanently in Switzerland, was also at the bar on that night, according to reports.
Her brother has posted an urgent request online, saying the family has had "no information" regarding the teenager or the three friends she was with, who are also reported missing.
Officials from her other nation say they are actively engaged with the developments.
