Debunking Venezuela Victory Footage and AI-Generated Pictures of Nicolás Maduro.
Synthetic images claiming to portray Venezuela's president under arrest following his capture by the United States have garnered many millions of impressions online.
The Way AI Images of Maduro Surfaced Soon After
The first fabricated AI image apparently displaying him taken off a plane surfaced within hours. The picture was absent from any authoritative American sources; rather, it was uploaded on X by an account purporting to be an “AI video art enthusiast”.
We’ve checked the SynthID tool, which found the image was generated or edited with AI tools.
More synthetic visuals were disseminated in the subsequent period, appearing to show more angles of Maduro in custody. Noticeable logos on these pictures reveal they were posted by an Instagram account called ultravfx.
AI analysis says all of these pictures were likewise created or altered AI technology.
Real Photo Released but Fabrications Persisted
The former US president released the first real photo of Maduro handcuffed aboard the USS Iwo Jima on Saturday morning. However, despite this real photo was published, synthetic pictures persisted online but were modified to include the grey tracksuit worn by Maduro.
Reverse image searches reveal the new fake images were initially shared on the video platform by a graphic design profile. Again, SynthID confirms these subsequent pictures were generated or edited generative artificial intelligence.
Key Points:
- Synthetic media gained traction after the news of Maduro's capture.
- The initial fabricated picture was shared very quickly on platform X.
- Tools like Google’s SynthID were used to verify the pictures as synthetic.
- Fake images continued to spread and evolve despite the release of real photographs.
- The source of many fabricated images was traced to social media accounts focused on AI art.
